Dr Simon Apte is currently Adjunct Associate Professor in the College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University where he collaborates with Prof. Larissa Schneider on mercury-related issues. From 1990 to 2024 he was a senior principal research scientist at the Centre for Environmental Contaminants research, CSIRO Land and Water at Lucas Heights Sydney.  During this time he was responsible for setting up its ultratrace analytical laboratory for analysing mercury speciation in environmental matrices such as waters, sediment and biota.  He has over 40 years experience of conducting mercury-related research including the development of new analytical techniques for the analysis of methylmercury in waters and sediment. He has also engaged in mercury-related consulting activities for a wide range of industries including the mining sector across the Asia-Pacific region.
